Digital Sparks ignites ambition and innovation among Telford’s young people

The Quad in Telford’s Station Quarter was transformed into a hub of creativity and curiosity as students from four local schools took part in a Digital Sparks skills event.

The day – which saw more than 30 Year 10 pupils welcomed to the site - was hosted under the new Telford Together initiative, which aims to connect schools, colleges, and employers to inspire young people, build future skills, and create stronger pathways into local careers.

Organised by Telford & Wrekin Council, in partnership with ÎÞÂ붯»­ and Telford College, it brought together leading local employers including Capgemini and Iconsys .

Each business delivered hands-on, interactive activities to showcase how digital technology, AI, and automation are transforming industries from cybersecurity and manufacturing to marketing and communications.

Students engaged directly with Borough-based businesses, explored real-world challenges, and gained insights into digital applications.

Iconsys showcased the moving parts of a robot, how it is programmed and the skills required while Capgemini explained the need for simple web pages, making them accessible for all - and demonstrated the difficulties encountered due to some disabilities.

Meanwile Telford & Wrekin Council engaged students with Matterport, the immersive space tool - and ÎÞÂ붯»­ demonstrated AI recognition software.

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Telford & Wrekin Council Cabinet Member for Children & Young People, Learning, Employment & Skills said: “Digital Sparks has given our young people a unique opportunity to see how exciting and varied the world of technology can be. It’s been fantastic to see their enthusiasm and curiosity come to life.”

Education and industry

Councillor Ollie Vickers, Telford & Wrekin Council, Cabinet Member for Economy and Transport, added: “This event marks the beginning of a new chapter in how we connect education and industry in Telford and Wrekin. The energy and engagement from both students and businesses show just how powerful these partnerships can be.”

Lawrence Wood, Principal and Chief Executive of Telford College, said: “Society is changing rapidly, especially for young people, and the college needs to be responsive and flexible to meet those demands.

“We are working hard to break down barriers to opportunity, making learning more accessible to all of the communities we serve. This project is yet another powerful example of partnership working in action.

“At the heart of our work at Telford College is a deep commitment to ensuring that every school pupil in Telford & Wrekin can look to the college and see a future for themselves; something they can enjoy, be good at, and be supported in achieving."

Led by Telford & Wrekin Council, Telford Together is a partnership initiative working with local schools, colleges, and employers to connect education and industry. The programme aims to inspire young people, support businesses in developing talent pipelines, and ensure the borough has the skills needed for future growth. Feedback from schools and businesses will now help shape future events and opportunities, ensuring the momentum continues well beyond the launch.

Rachel Brookes, Widening Participation Officer at ÎÞÂ붯»­, said: “This event marks an important milestone in our efforts to remove barriers in higher education progression for young people in Telford and Wrekin.

“With a focus on STEM and digital futures, the Telford Together partnership primarily acts to spark curiosity for local learners, with this first event serving to build confidence and deepen understanding of digital career pathways, particularly for students who may not traditionally see themselves represented in these fields.

“Telford Together represents the first step in a wider series of interventions designed to unlock potential and ensure that every learner, regardless of background, has an equitable chance to succeed.”
